Finals are fast approaching which means one thing. Stress.
As a third year college student, I have had my fair share of stressful projects, exams, and evaluations throughout the school year all leading up to one week piled with mountains of work. Whether you’re in high school, college, or trying to survive out in the real world, it’s important to keep ways to de-stress in your back pocket. That’s why I am going to share with you some easy and fairly inexpensive ways that I de-stress!
Exercising is a great way to relieve stress! If you’re anything like me, getting the motivation to exercise can be a little difficult. I’d much rather watch Netflix! But trust me when I say that exercising is one of the most recommended ways of relieving stress. Why is it so good for you? Well, not only does it keep your body in tip-top shape, working out releases endorphins which make you feel good. This Mayo Clinic article says this is often referred to as a “runner’s high.” This pushes the stress out of your mind and helps you to relax. So get out there and get moving!
2. Play with a Pet
Nothing is better than snuggling with a pupper or playing fetch with a doggo. Similar to exercise, petting and playing with a pet releases endorphins, making you and your pet feel good. So, give your furbaby a head to tail message or go for a walk and combine tips one and two. Don’t have a pet of your own? Ask a friend or find a local shelter that may let you volunteer!
Here’s a couple photos of my babies (the Boxer and Lab/Rottie mix on the left side), as well as some other puppers I’ve met:
3. Do a craft
Now I hear you: “Monet, I’m not a child. I’m not cutting construction paper and using glue sticks!” Hear me out! Crafting can be a great way to relieve some pent-up stress. Paint a picture, knit, or make a papier-mâché bowl; the possibilities are endless. A great place to find craft ideas and how-tos is Pinterest. I’ve got a whole board dedicated to DIY projects! Get crafting!
4. Listen to Music
Nothing can take stress away like checking out and listening to music. With so many ways to access music, like Spotify, Apple Music, and Youtube Music, there’s no excuse not to jam out! Log in, make your perfect playlist, and get rockin’!
5. Take a Nap
Possibly the simplest option for relieving stress; just take a dang nap! You want to make sure that you’re utilizing your nap time to it’s full advantage. Wake up too early and you won’t feel rested. Get up too late and you can feel groggy, tired, and disoriented, making it harder to get back to work. Sleep.org says that 20 minutes is all you need for the optimal nap. That doesn’t seem like a long time, but give it a try. You’ll be rested and ready to get back to work after a quick snooze!
Everyone encounters stress in their lives, but not everyone knows how to handle it. These tricks are simple, but effective for combating finals stress.
